Family sponsorship
Canadian citizens and permanent residents can sponsor certain family members to become permanent residents. Officers assess both the documents and the genuineness of the relationship, and we help you present both clearly.

Common questions
Who can sponsor a family member?
You must be at least 18 and a Canadian citizen, a person registered under the Indian Act, or a permanent resident living in Canada. Citizens living abroad can sponsor a spouse, partner or dependent child if they plan to live in Canada when the person becomes a permanent resident. Sponsors sign an undertaking to support the person financially.
Can my spouse work while the application is processed?
Some spouses and partners in Canada can apply for an open work permit. Eligibility depends on the application and current rules, so we check it case by case.
What if my previous application was refused?
We review the refusal letter and, where possible, the officer’s notes, then advise whether to reapply, appeal or change the approach.
